It's no secret that it hasn't been easy with our grandbabies and the dogs. We've always had a dog, but for some reason the grandkids have been afraid. Getting through Fred's puppy period with the grandkids has been a challenge. They didn't understand that Fred just wants to play and Fred didn't understand why they wanted nothing to do with him. So most of the time when the grandkids were over we would gate Fred off in the hallway or kitchen. You can see an older post about it here.
Funny thing is it's mainly the boys who are afraid. We now have three grandsons, Mitch, Cameron and Jaron and one granddaughter, Emma. Emma is the brave one. She has always tried to pet Fred and Gloria. We thought a good way to get them used to each other was to leash Fred when they were here so she could see him but we still had control. Next all we had to do was leave the gentle leader on him and he would behave.
Now when I babysit Emma, Fred will actually behave himself without the leader on. All I have to do is show him the gentle leader and he will behave. So yes, our Freddie is growing up! It helps that the grandbabies are getting a little bigger too! So here are some "eureka" moments from babysitting Emma yesterday. Proof that Emma and Fred have officially become friends!
Giving Fred a belly rub.
Trying to decide if she should let him see Diego or not.
Deciding it's okay.
Changing her mind. (typical girl heehee!)
You know your friends when the dog sticks his tongue in your ear!
"Come on Grandma!"
Do you think Emma was getting a little tired of me snapping pictures? BOL!
"Being good is exhausting!"
Fred caption: "Come on, Momma. Snap me some more" ^^
ReplyDeleteWow, Emma's such a brave little darling. I bet it's because girls have more affinity than boys do when it comes to pets. I've noticed that with my nephews as well. They either play to rough or are too scared. Weird, right?

Oh! What cute pictures!!! Glad they get along!! xoxo Chloe and Ladybug
ReplyDelete.,great pictures. Looks that the two were really having fun.

Hopefully as they get older they will get over the fear

Emma is beautiful! Looks like she has no problem getting along with Freddie and Gloria.... I have a friend (Mike and Beth's granddaughter) named Bailey and she loves me too! However, her brother Trevor is a little cautious around me.... Aren't they great fun to have around! Love all the pics!
ReplyDeleteThat was sooooo adorable!
ReplyDeleteWhat bravery on everyone's part :-) The future holds great things for these relationships!
ReplyDeleteAwww cute pics! Love the pic of her looking at the camera, although you can tell she's not feeling too good. Freddie's such a good boy!
ReplyDeleteThose pictures are precious. Your granddaughter is cute (so is Fred don't want him to get jealous...lol).
ReplyDeleteAwww... I want a little friend like Emma -- she looks so nice! I'm glad Freddie was a good boy. He's right though... it's certainly exhausting to be good (hence my recent carpet experience).
ReplyDeleteLoved all the photos! :)
Woofs & hugs, <3

You know it's funny - children have a natural tendency to be a little frightened of dogs. Rubie and I were standing outside a shopping centre mall entrance waiting for hubby to finish using an ATM. Then a mother with a girl - maybe 5 or 6 years old walked past. The girl whined nervously while eyeing off Rubie sitting calmly at my feet, and I hear the mother say - "don't be scared, that one is on a leash!!" They walked past with the girl giving Rubie the "stink eye" with her turned head. I was amazed...... how could anyone be afraid of my little gorgeous furry girl?? Takes all types I remind myself.
ReplyDeleteAnyway - little Emma is so precious and she will benefit greatly from your teachings regarding dogs and animals.

How sweet. Your granddaughter is precious. We have recently had my great nephew over who has not experienced dogs at all. Our hounds love kids but as you said they can be a little over anxious sometimes. Well Winston was licking my nephews ears last week (he is 2) and all he would say was MiMi (grandma) he is eating me, he is eating me. Of course we all are laughing so hard, I just hope the poor kid didn't have nightmares. But he is a work in progress with the hounds for sure. Have a great day! Sniffs, The HoundDogs
ReplyDeleteEmma is darling. I think that they will be furends and then the boys will see that and join in.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a wonderful friendship in the making to me. I love kids and babies. MOM is always amazed at how I am around them. I'm big and strong and can pull MOM across the room or up a trail but when I am with children I just know how much strength to use and I am as gentle as a lamb. And how cute is that little Emma, just adorable.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Goose
Emma, Fred and Gloria are all adorable! Thanks for stopping by my blog- I'm now a new follower!!
ReplyDeleteThat has been one of the challenges of dog raising in our house- getting them to behave around kids. Our dogs are angels around our kids, but want to jump on others, which scares them. We have to leash them also until they are able to calm themselves down.
ReplyDeleteCute pictures. The not wanting to share Diego cracked me up!
The pictures of Fred and Emma are so sweet! So glad that both of them are getting along well.
ReplyDeleteDue to unknown reason (to me), Eva is scared of most children especially children who are loud and a bit hyperactive. She will try to stay out from them or stay close with us most of them time. However, she will approach to the children who are a bit scared of dogs, LOL!
Way to go Fred!!! I have two little people who come to visit me too!!! I am just now getting to play with them too! They are a lot of fun.

What can be more precious than kids and dogs together, these shots melt my heart! Good job to both Freddie and Emma (love that name by the way :) Have a great day.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a long, slow, appropriate introduction to me. A lot of people seem to just assume kids and dogs will get along just fine with little or no introduction, which is always scary to me.
ReplyDeleteSooo Sweet! Freddie was a good boy. We have a little granddaughter named Emma too - she has dark hair and brown eyes too. Unfortunately we have to board our girls at a kennel. Little Lucy is the only one that I allow around our little granddaughters. Our granddaughters are a few states away so visiting with them is super special!

Emma is so cute!! I'm glad that they are getting used to each other. I didn't realize that kids could be afraid of dogs if they've been around them their whole life! Hopefully everyone will grow up and get along great!
ReplyDeleteVery cute pics. Stanley and I just met the grandkids and they are sort of scared of us too. We hope they can't resist our cuteness for too long though.
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I like your hooman familee, and ur cute pooches. :)
ReplyDeleteAwww how sweet! Yeah I get what you mean about it being weird when family is scared of your dogs. My younger sister doesn't care for dogs (except Nola) and we grew up with them
ReplyDeleteDachshund Nola's mommy
Fred, that's so sad that the boys are scared of you. They would make awesome playmates for you. Maybe that'll change. At least you have Emma to play with.
ReplyDeleteAww, Fred, you were being such a good boy! But we agree - it can be very tiring!
ReplyDeleteI think they will become great friends, I can feel it! I mean, she let him sniff Diego, what a big step!! :)
ReplyDeleteAww, I hope the boys get brave enough too someday. Fred, you are such a good boy!
ReplyDeleteLoved this post! :)
ReplyDeleteThe grandkids will wear you out Fred. what is it with society. girls are more agressive then men. I see girls getting Tattoos while men get ear rings. What gives! Buck up guys! Its OK to be in-touch with your feminine side but, Gees.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful granddaughter! Those boys will clue in eventually!
ReplyDeleteSweet pictures, and Emma is waaay too adorable. :)
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean regarding children and dogs, Basset Momma!! We know friends who have this sweet, blond-haired little girl. Until meeting my BEAUTIFULLY UNIQUE Beagle/German Shepherd cross, Rose, she seemed terrified of dogs!! But her baby brother is a natural canine lover!! Seriously!! Now, this little girl is great around Rose.... Except for the fact that my mongrel's high-pitched baying hurts her ears!! Hounds!! ;op
ReplyDeleteEmma is beautiful!! You must be proud. ;-D
I hear that little people can be good for dropping lots of food around to eat!
ReplyDeleteNubbin wiggles,
Oskar
Now that's something I call bravery. I'm happy that they got along well. And I do hope when they get older they'll be able to conquer their fear 100%.

Fred and Gloria - you are wonderful ambassadors for us wee dogs - in showing how we co-ordinate with children. Plenty of TLC and the kiss - always a great way to start.
ReplyDeleteLove all the photo's and Freddie, you deserve a nap.
Lots of Love from Kirra -x-
Great photo's! Fred deserve a rest after he was sooo good! Emma is a cutie pie.

I always love your posts, but this has to be one of my favorites. Freddie and Emma...movie stars! Emma is smart. As appealing as Freddie is, I don't think it would be good to share Diego.
