Freddies' Take on His Surgery

What the heck just happened?
Where did I go this morning?
How did I get home?
Why do I feel so funny and WHERE THE F#*CK ARE MY BALLS!!

Okay, don't panic Freddie Boy.......

Maybe I just need to lay down for a bit until I'm a little more clear headed.

Well, that sure didn't help.

Now my freakin' eye is swelled and I still have no balls!

Momma.....what did you do to me?

You know what.....just forget it!

Bring me another martini and keep 'em coming!!

It's gonna be a long day!

Freddie's Big Day

Yep, it's finally here! Freddie's big day to be neutered or as the vet put it CASTRATED! Okay, that word just sounds painful so we will go with neutered.

First let me say that Freddie tried to use this face as a defence mechanism this morning.

It didn't work!

I was up at the crack of dawn with bells on my toes and a spring in my step. Oh, Freddie Spaghetti knew something was going down today. Then as if it wasn't humbling enough for poor Freddie this morning, the vet had him down as a cat! He was so embarrassed at this point that he wouldn't look anybody in the eye, he just hung his head and went with the assistant.

I think he knew something was up yesterday as he was being pretty sucky all day.
He came to me wanting to know......

What's up Momma? Why do you seem so happy?

But all I could do was snicker, every time I looked at him. So, he retreated to his father's lap. I guess it's a "man" thing.

After today, no more Mr. Bo Dangles! Sure it will be Mr. Droopy Sac for awhile, but I think he will survive. Just remember Freddie, your big sister Gloria is getting fixed today too, so suck it up!

In two weeks Freddie and Gloria will be frolicking about together and all will be forgotten!
Life is good!

Mine and Fred's Week

Well, ole Freddie has had a busy week. After murdering his new toy,I say murder because, well, look for yourself.

Ya, it's dead.

I got him a very expensive, hopefully Fred proof new Kong toy. It's made of different textures and materials and rated 8 from 1 to 10 on the toughness scale. Freddie has had it for a week and it's still in one piece! It is fairly heavy but he still carries it around and it is big enough that him and Gloria will be able to share. (I haven't told Fred he has to share his toys yet)I'll open that can of worms on another day!

Me......I've just been trying to keep Freddie's mind off of his up coming surgery on Monday.(snicker, snicker) I just can't help it. It makes me giddy everytime I think of how close it is now.

Walks with Fred have just been great the last week. He is so, we'll say, "strong willed" some people might say rammy, or misbehaved, but we'll say, "strong willed", that he has basically dragged me around the last 9 months. I've tried different collars to stop his pulling to no avail. Then I tried a harness and well, Fred just thought he was a sled dog that somebody (not me) yelled "mush" to. A harness on a basset who's short legs and strong chest just give him more power....what was I thinking?

Oh, I'm sure in a perfect world with a laid back 10 year old hound that'd be great.....but not here.

I had mulled over the "Halti" but had tried that with Barney and it never worked, it just didn't seem right on a basset. Well, being desperate, not to mention every muscle being pulled in my body and being embarrassed walking him, I went in search of help. What I came home with is called the "Gentle Leader".

Well, HOLY COW!! I just can't believe it!! Freddie is a new dog on this lead. He behaves himself, walks beside me and doesn't pull even once. I just burst with pride everyday when I walk him now. I'm sure everyone who has seen us struggle with our daily walks over the past 9 months must be thinking, "Wow, did they take that dog to obedient school or something?" This lead is amazing for a dog that likes to pull. I am now in total control of our walks now.(ha!ha!) Why didn't I do this 9 months ago? Oh, well, better late than never.

Don't do it! Don't feel sorry for him......this is good...really!

New Toy

Fred came to me the other day and told me he wanted a new toy.

"Momma, I need a new toy!"

Well, he didn't come right out and say it; we all know basset hounds can't talk, right? Oh, I beg to differ. Freddie with his wrinkled face, (which he can do on demand, by the way) hush puppy eyes, droopy ears and "woes me" look, knows how to work it; this allows him to speak his own language, which I have quickly learned. Any owner of a basset hound will know this to be true. Now since we have already spent a small fortune on toys for Freddie, (he has ruined every toy that we have gotten him. Correction - he only likes the ones he can ruin; the ones he can't, he doesn't bother with.)
I told him no.
Then of course he started to really pour it on!

He laid on the floor and started kicking and screaming.

So I did the only thing I could.....ran out to the store to find, yet again, the perfect toy that Freddie would love but be unable to destroy.(Ya! you try and tell Freddie no!)
It was going to be tough because apparently it doesn't exist!
So far he's had the ferret with the bottle inside,(he had that ripped open and the bottle chewed in under ten minutes). He's had the ferret without the bottle. He's had the nylon duck, the giant elephant to hump,(ripped his face off) 3 teddy bears, a stuffed beagle (can't blame him there!)a stuffed blue dog with rope, countless Kong, Nylabone and raw hide, oh the list goes on and on. And at about $8.00-$10.00 a pop, it's cost us a small fortune. The only toy he hasn't wrecked is his blue bed buddy that we had waiting for him when we first brought him home. He still sleeps with it. He will, on occasion, bring it out and throw it around when he's bored, but he won't chew his bed buddy! When I got home from Zehrs the other day I brought him a Hartz stuffed hedgehog. I gave it to him while I put away my groceries, when I turned around he had the stuffing ripped out of it. That was under 5 minutes! So, you can see why I hesitate when Fred comes to me and begs for a new toy.
As usual though he gives me that look and starts to yap, so off I went.

Now, since I came home with rubber toy and not a stuffed animal he snubbed it. Then he had a staring contest with it.

"Are you lookin' at me? Are you lookin' at me?"

He wanted to show me his dissatisfaction with it, but.....at the same time it was calling to him. So, he did the only thing he could. Grabbed it, jumped down and ripped its' head off! Another 8 bucks down the drain. When will I learn! So, if anybody out there has a suggestion for a toy that will last for Freddie, please let me know!!
