Fred's Appointment

Our vet called with an appointment for a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon. It is in Guelph at the Ontario Veterinary College which is only an hour away from us.  His appointment is the morning of October the 11th.   We will take Freddie's x-rays with us and the surgeon will tell us flat out if Fred is a candidate for hip replacement or not. He said we are probably looking at $5500.00 per hip. This is way more than we anticipated, but we will wait until his appointment and go from there. I will do what it takes for Fred and if that means putting a chip-in on my blog I will.  I am going see if there is any help available and seek out everything I can.  As far as we know they do not have payment plans here.  This hospital wants half the day you take them for surgery and the other half the day you pick them up. But I don't want to get ahead of myself and will cross each bridge as we come to it.  So everybody keep your fingers and paws crossed!

I can't thank everybody enough for all the love and support we have received.  We are open to any and all suggestions at things that can be done for Freddie.  That is the wonderful thing about blogville is it is just a world of information from people just like you and me who can share experiences and advice.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

  2. Hang in there Fred. We pray that Oct. 11th will be a good news day for you. We're still praying for you my furend!

Mommy said that our Vet school did the same thing with payment for my surgery. Half up front and half at pick up. It's a shame that all surgeries are soooo expensive for us. And who can afford pet insurance? Heck, Daddy has to pay for ALL of their health insurance and wow, you could buy a golden crown with all that money.

    Hugs,

  4. All our paws are crossed here for a good consult with the surgeon. Having been at the Atlantic Vet College with dogs in the past, I know about the money upfront and on pick up too. I was lucky enough to have had pet insurance to cover 80%. I think a chip in for Freddie would be an awesome idea, we all love that silly guy.

  5. We would be happy to make a contribution to Fred, although we cant make as much as we would like. We'd like to be able to pay for the whole think! I figured it would cost about that much or more, of course we live in the expensive vet bill capital of the world in the NYC area. Norberts bloat surgery was about 9000 and I am sure hips cost more, luckily insurance did cover some. Ask if there is anything like care credit or any sort of financing. At the hospitals in NJ you need to put the money down but they will take care credit, which is basically a low interest credit card

  6. Oh my I thought a payment plan would have been available. Are there any basset hound charities that can help? Do you have a training college that can help for a reduced fee? Just ideas. Thinking of you. My friend just spent £12,000 having her dogs' spine re-clipped and the insurance doesn't even cover half. At least they gave her a reasonable payment plan per month so she is just coping. Hope peeps your side of the pond know a good solution money-wise. Take Care
    Best wishes Molly

  11. Wow that is expensive. Oh my. I hope it all works out that Fred can have the surgery and you can find a way to pay for it. I find it hard to believe that there is no financing available. We used CareCredit, which some have mentioned, to pay for Thunder's bloat surgery. They offered 6 months same as cash, (it is like a credit card...if you don't pay in terms there is interest). The vets where the big bills pile up are usually the ones that offer those options. You might inquire when you are there. Good luck. I would love to chip in, but right now I have my own vet bills to pay off...Thunder and his legs, kitty (surgery) and Storm (surgery). Maybe once I pay those off. :)

  12. Google "help with paying vet bills" - there are several organizations who help out. ...and even if they can't pay the whole bill, a little bit is always better than none.

    We will keep paws crossed!

  15. Wow that is a lot of money. I hope you'll find a way through. I guess most of us out here would sell the clothes off our backs for our dogs if they needed it. I'm sure a chip in would raise a lot - Fred is a very popular guy after all! Deccy & Mum x

  18. I think a hip replacement is so worth it!! :) Freddy had one when he was a baby and it made a world of a difference. He became more alive and active. The only reason we noticed that he needed one was that one back leg wasn't growing at all... it was just limp and lifeless. He didn't act in pain or anything... probably because he didn't know any different then. Freddy would totally benefit, and I hope the surgeon says he is a candidate!!

  24. Sending out all pawesative thoughts for you and Freddie, especially on the 11th! Glad you got an appointment relatively quickly. You've probably already considered this, but have you looked into online grants to help afford the surgery? I just did a quick search and there were a couple in Canada that might help. More thoughts!

  28. We feel so bad for Freddie. Lilys surgeon offered a payment plan maybe you can look into that. Hopefully they will only do one hip at a time. They still recommend Lily have her second knee done. Yikes. The things we do for our furry kids

  31. Hi,
When Darwin's foot was broken, the vet offered to not charge his own surgical fees, partly because he wanted to practise and we're really poor graduate students. But, we didn't do the surgery in the end because it wouldn't have helped much. Best is, Darwin is fine now with 3 good legs, and pain free.

I don't know if your vet is willing to consider that or not. Try to bring it up or consider other vets? Also, if we do some kind of charity thing on blogville, not so much as direct monetary contribution only, but some of us can contribute nice things for an auction sale perhaps? I know I don't have a lot of cash now but I can surely give up a few of my goodies for an auction. Sure hope we can help!

  34. Hey Fred, Hey Gloria, Jet here. Hi Miss Janet.

Besides sending Jetty kisses and JJ hugs to infinity and beyond (Mom says you would get the reference...) we have a thought.

In the states, we have this thingie called Care Credit. It's run by GE Capital. This card allows you to apply for credit via online and the purpose is for human or animal healthcare. Caring people told me about this when Koko's surgery ran me $3,000+ last September. I added JJ's surgery this summer too, since I had paid 1/2 down by then. It's at least worth a try.

  35. Paws crossed for you all. Have you looked into care credit? http://www.carecredit.com/

  36. Holy carp! That seems like a lot, but there would be recovery time between hip surgeries so you wouldn't have to come up with the whole $11,000 at once. Maybe you could find a low interest regular credit card or one that has zero interest for a year? An online auction fundraiser could be a good blogville event too.

24 paws are wishing you good luck from here, 28 if you count Doug the lizard!

  42. I hope the consultation goes well. Freddie is still young, so he should be a wonderful candidate. That's what my bets are on. If a chip-in is needed, I will certainly add what my skinny wallet will allow. Something is better than nothing. A blog post, a thread on basset.net & a Facebook post will all follow suit as well.

  43. Your paw photo gave me a big smile :)
Keepin paws crossed that the vets give you good news about Fred and hopefully a much smaller price tag. Yikes!

  46. Oh Janet, I'm so sorry. I've been so caught up in my own silliness that I'm just learning of your ordeal with Freddie now. :(

I'm glad I got to read the part where you've decided to try for a hip replacement before I knew how dire the situation was. I can only imagine how upsetting this has been for you and your family. But I am glad you're going for the replacement - I will send all good thoughts your way for him to be an excellent candidate.

And whatever I can do to help raise the cash, please, let us know. And really, you shouldn't hesitate to put up a chip-in. Huge burdens are more easily carried by many shoulders. You have enough to worry about with Freddie, let us help ease your financial worry a little.

  47. If a chip in is what it takes to fix Freddie then I am all in.
