Ode to the Hounds

This is a poem that I had wrote after we got Gloria in April of 2011.  I had called it "Basset Hound Momma x2"   Enjoy! :)

I spend all my days now cleaning up mud,
From Freddie Spaghetti and Gloria, his bud.
Then there's the drool on the cupboards and floor,
Everywhere I turn, there's a little bit more!

It's on all our furniture, even our t.v.
'Cause when these two hounds shake,(thank God there's not three)
The drool it does fly and sticks just like muck,
So if you're within range, you'd better just duck!

Then there's the fur all over our bed.
Not to mention that bassets love to curl by your head!
Our couch and our chair we no longer own,
They haven't figured out yet, how to use the home phone.

Then there's the smell when two bassets have gas,
Nobody ever said that this breeds got class!
They puke and they drool, they fart and they snore,
But who could ever ask for anything more?

For a nice clean house and room on my bed,
Would I ever give up Gloria and Fred?
Not on your life, I would never trade places
Or give up the love from these precious faces!

  18. We love it! What a fantastic ode to the hounds. And the picture is just perfect. You'd never suspect them of some of the...um....less...desirable traits you mentioned.

  21. A perfect picture and verse! :-)!!!

I read your last few posts and was so, so sorry to hear about your precious boy Freddie. I hope you are doing well, at what I know is a hard time--I've cared for many Goldens that had to have orthopedic surgery as well as ones where it was felt surgery would not be successful. I've no doubt you've received great advice, and I will apologize for giving mine when it wasn't asked, but I really hope you will seek out a specialist (orthopedic surgeon) to see if there is anything that could be done--I've seen acupuncture, and other treatments make a huge difference. I know that Bassett's are made differently that Goldens, but maybe.....Again, my apologies for giving my thoughts that weren't asked for.

  22. This is such a great poem. I am going to a party to celebrate mid autumn festival tonight. Traditionally, chinese people would eat mooncakes, drink wine and recite poems. I think im going to recite this one tonight.

Please, please...do grab the badge from our bloggie and write us a creative story. You are obviously very talented!!!!! Besides, i think the hounds want to WIN! Gloria vs Fred!!!!

  30. Spoken like a true dog owner. Only those who've had first had experience are capable of describing their dog breed so explicitly.

    We hope Freddie's okay.

  35. I remember a long time ago hearing a woman say, "With a dog, you never really have a clean house." She had gotten rid of the family dog--which tells you a lot about that sort of person. We all know which is the better sort!
