Hard as Nails

Basset Hounds have some of the toughest nails of the dog world.  They can be very hard to cut.  Gloria lets me trim her nails without a peep.  She's such a good girl.

Freddie Spaghetti......well he has to go to the vet to get it done  because he doesn't like anyone touching his darn nails.  He gets upset and I get upset. It's an awful experience I just dread .  He was so upset yesterday as I had to take him to the vets to have his nails trimmed.  I had just put it off too long and finally had to bite the bullet and take him in.  That's the first time I've ever seen him shake at the vets office.  He peed all over and I just plain felt like dirt!  Gloria was upset that she had to stay home alone and she started howling.

Fred whined all the way to the vet, but we got it done and we made it home.

Mr. Dramatica is still milking it for all it's worth and I'm just plain exhausted!

  1. We think Fred and Winston must be from the same litter. Winston wiggles and whinnes so bad that we cannot hold him down. So he goes to the vet for name trims as well, but we try to go every 2 weeks if not once a month. We did find a place right out our back door that does nail trims for $5.00 and we have been going there since it is close. He does a lot better if they take him in a backroom where he cannot see his Mommy. Amiee will go to sleep while you trim her nails but goes give Winston moral support. When we had Cleo, nobody touched her nails except for her vetman. She would jump on the table and put her paw out to him but she would take my finger and hands off if I tried. BOL It is funny how each one is so different. Sniffs, The HoundDogs

P.S..My vet says he throws away the nail trimmers after doing the hounds because they aren't worth using anymore. You are right they are tough as nails. :)

  3. Oh my brother and sister HATE having their nails cut! As long as Mom holds me and my grandma or grandpaw cuts my nails I'm a good girl!

  4. Two of my dogs seem to think they have nerve endings in their nails. Not possible, I tell them. But we have to go through the whole drama thing.

  5. We clip both of our dogs' nails. Thunder has super hard and super big nails and is not fond of having them done. We make sure the clippers are nice and sharp, but I think it is still not comfortable for him. We do use the lure of the treat to get him and Storm to cooperate. The easiest nails in this house to clip are the cat's.

  7. What a great post. I need to get to the groomer to get Freedom, Casper & Nikki's nails trimmed. I just can't (won't) do it and my husband doesn't even like to do it, so we just pay up. Poor Fred! But it must be done. Love your header...noses to the ground.

  8. Daisy has nails of steel that grow super fast. Thank goodness she will do anything for a bit of cheese or I'd be in trouble!

  9. Hi, Bassettmomma! I love your hounds and your blog. I nominated you for the Liebster Blog Award. Check out my blog for details of it...it has some "requirements" but they are pretty easy to do.

  10. Oh no, poor Fred. Doesn't it just break your heart when you know they're scared? My Lab (who nothing ever bothered) used to hate having his nails trimmed, too. When they're so thick like that, it probably does hurt a bit.

And don't even get me started about Bella, the scared-y dog. I've been trying for 3 years to get her used to the Dremmel so I can trim her nails quickly. I'm still filing them manually. Maybe someday...

  11. If it's any comfort, as a dog groomer I can tell you that's totally normal for a basset. I think part of it is because basset nails are so big it takes an awful lot of force to push the cutters through...might be uncomfortable/painful.
